Texture Press - Ian Barnard

Above is my first image that I've done with my new Texture Press download.  I purchased it from Creative Market.  The best part was that it was only $15.  I have been trying to get this look on my hand lettering pieces for months. Numerous multi-stepped tutorials had left me frustrated and confused until I found this! I'm so excited about the possibilities.  Buy it here. Thanks Fred for the heads up on this one. The photo is from my trip to Marfa last summer. Beautiful!

Prada Marfa

Here is a picture I took of Prada Marfa in late July. We were in town for the Viva Big Bend Music Festival. The landscapes and skies are hard to beat.

I finally screen printed something!

I bought a YUDU back in August and it's been sitting on the studio floor....untouched.  Last weekend I finally decided to give it a whirl.  I started simple with a text design that is inspired by my Thunderbird Motel shirt.  I printed it on one of my old undershirts so if I screwed up it would be on an old shirt. I really didn't believe that my first attempt would be this good.  I've ordered a few more supplies to take my screen printing to the next level....haha.  I plan to do more in the near future.  This is pretty fun!

Starting The Collection - Stardust Motel Sign - Marfa, Texas

My Stardust Motel Pic

My new purchase!

This has been a crazy week....sorry for the lack of posts. First of all I had to go back to work after 16 days off. That takes a little adjustment. Secondly, it's freezing here in Dallas! We had no school yesterday because of some slick spots on the roads....I was out at 9 AM and the roads were perfect. Wind chills are in the single digits.....burrrr. Waste of a day that we'll have to make up when it's actually nice in April. On a more pleasant subject, I am staying true to my New Year's resolution and I began buying some original art/photos. Like I said a few days ago, I'm starting small and will hopefully build up. The second image shown above is the first purchase. It comes from a talented photographer from Austin - Rachel Goldstar. Make sure and check out her Etsy shop for some cool pics! Its a great photo of the good ole Stardust Motel sign on the outskirts of Marfa. The first photo is one that I took of the same sign a few years back. Rachel's is way better! I'll keep you posted on some of the other things that are about to fill my gallery wall.

Taste of Marfa

I just read a great article in the New York Times about the delicious food found in Marfa, Texas. There are also some great photos by my favorite local photographer, Allison V. Smith. Check it out! Here is my Food Shark pencil drawing that I did last year.

Cousin Eddie Arrested in Marfa, Texas

Breaking News! Randy Quaid (Cousin Eddie) was arrested in Marfa, Texas. I find it funny that one of my favorite comedic actors was arrested in my favorite west Texas town. Coincidence? I think not.

Marfa NYC

Most everyone who has read this blog before knows my love of Marfa, Texas and the Big Bend region. Well apparently someone else has that love as well but they live in New York City. There is a restaurant in the Lower East Side neighborhood that has a theme of everything Marfa, Texas. Crazy! The name of the restaurant is Marfa NYC. I passed by it and took some pics. They are only open for dinner and we didn't make it down for a taste. The menu looks great! They even serve $6 Lone Star Beer. Maybe those New Yorkers don't know they practically give away the National Beer of Texas down here in Texas. You used to be able to get a 2o pack for like 10 bucks or something. Hopefully Marfa NYC will still be around on my next trip up there.....I'll be sure to drop in for dinner.

Marfa Monday - Pizza Foundation

View of Marfa from the top of the courthouse

Looking for some solid pizza in the Big Bend region? Pizza Foundation in Marfa is all you need. PF sits on San Antonio street in a remodeled gas station. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but I promise you, they serve some of the best pizza around. They have outstanding salads as well. They also are open most of the week. A lot of restaurants in Marfa are only open Wednesdays thru Saturdays. So Pizza Foundation is a great place to eat early in the week if you are around.....or late in the week....it's that good, trust me. We ate there the last time that we were in town and couldn't get over how good it was. It's a must when you stop through town.

Marfa Monday - Marfa Film Festival

NCFOM - filmed near Marfa

If you got some time on your hands next week check out the Marfa Film Festival. Good luck finding a place to stay....you might have to rough it. It looks really cool, I may have to add this event to the social calendar in the next couple of years. Let me know if anyone goes, I'd love to hear about it.

Marfa Water Tower Sketch - New Pens!

I went out and bought some new pens a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to get back to the basics and do some smaller drawings. My art time is limited balancing my family, job, and activities. I picked up some Sakura Pigma Microns on the recommendation of a fellow blogger who does the Daily Draw. These are really great pens and I can see why so many people enjoy using them. I had some back in college but I didn't really pay much attention to the brand or anything. Above is the first drawing that I did with the new pens....I think I'm gonna like these. The drawing is on a 4 x 6 note card.

Work In Progress - Water Tower #2

I added a few touches to the water tower painting. I'm gonna look at it a while and make any adjustments I feel necessary in the coming days, and then call it done. Overall, I'm happy with it. I really like the red peeking through in the tower legs. I may play with the clouds some to give it a little more depth.....I'm definitely still trying to find my own style in these recent paintings, but it's hard for me to cut loose from my technical realistic ways.

Sunday, Almost Done Day

Here's a peek at the current painting I've been working on for a week or so. Today, I went ahead and put a few layers on the water tower. I'm intentionally going to leave some of the red-orange background showing through in certain places to add a little extra interest. I may set this one aside for a while and see if any other ideas for this one come to me. I also may finish up the Del Mar sign that I shelved for a while. I guess I've been putting it off because all that is left is some small detail stuff. I'll show the progress on it once I get started again.

Water Tower Progress

I started another painting on Sunday. Last week I showed you a couple of possibilities that I was thinking of doing. I went ahead and went with the water tower with the sky in it. All I have done so far is lay down the first layers of clouds. I do like the way it looks on the red orange background. I will probably let some of that show through in certain spots. Anyway, I have a ways to go, but I wanted to show the progress of the painting. Hopefully I will be able to knock this one out in a week or so......if I can find some time.

Marfa Book Company

Down the street from the courthouse sits the Marfa Book Company. It seem a little out of place in a town like Marfa......well maybe not. The MBC is great bookstore with a wide range of Texana, new releases, and old classics. They specialize in art and architecture books. Two of my favorite subjects! The decor of the bookstore is very modern and hip. It is a great place to sit quietly and sip a cup of coffee while looking over a new book. In the back of the bookstore is a small art gallery. There are rotating art shows that are on display....check out their website for current shows and openings. On our visit, we found the staff to be very helpful and friendly. I picked up some books about Big Bend NP on my visit. The MBC is a great place to spend a couple of hours reading and relaxing.

Marfa Monday - Marfa Mystery Lights

When I used to teach Texas History to 7th graders a few years back, I would always discuss the Mystery Lights of Marfa during our Mountains and Basins unit. The kids loved it! Most had never heard of them and it really seemed to interest them. The whole mystery aspect is very appealing to 7th graders. The last time I went out to Marfa I made sure to make 2 trips out to the viewing area. It's so cool! There is a real nice viewing area set up on Highway 90 between Marfa and Alpine. You basically show up around sunset and look out at the horizon towards the south....and wait....and wait. Most people think that they see the lights....but they are car lights from highway 67. You can tell that they are car lights because they follow the same pattern....every time! Also, ranchers had reported seeing these lights before cars were invented. It's hilarious to see the tourist ooohing and aaahing over the car lights. If you are lucky enough....you will see the real thing. Which I think I did. I saw something out there around 11 PM. There were only a few of us there because it was late and it was cold!.....but we saw a flash of lights stretch out along the horizon....and we all kind of looked at each other in disbelief. This is an absolute must when you visit! It is really neat. Sometimes you see them and sometimes you don't. To read more about them....check out the link above.

Marfa Monday - Chinati Foundation

The Chinati Foundation is a contemporary art museum located in Marfa, Texas conceived and founded by the late artist Donald Judd. It is known in the art world as the largest public museum for the permanent installation of sculpture in the world. The non-profit museum opened to the public in 1986. It was Judd’s goal at Chinati to bring art, architecture, and nature together in order to form a coherent whole. People come from all over the world to view the work here. Check out their website for all the current installations.

Marfa Monday - Hotel Paisano

The famous Hotel Paisano in downtown Marfa. When we were there a couple of years ago, we had the pleasure of staying there for a couple of nights. The rooms were really small, but they were real nice. We were lucky enough to get one of the rooms that had it's own private balcony with chairs and tables (as seen in the picture above). I guess when you reserve your room 6 months in advance....you get the hook up. They also keep track of all of their reservations by hand in a huge book! No computers! So when you call to make reservations, they actually hand write it in the ledger. The Hotel Paisano is best known for hosting the cast of the movie Giant back in the 1956. Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean all stayed there during the filming. Ask a worker at the hotel to show you each of their rooms....it's pretty cool. It's a must see when you are in town. The lobby is decked out with a cool western decor.
