Artseen Artist Studio Tour Saturday and Sunday!

Well, I know I haven't been posting much lately.....but I have a decent reason.  I've been crazy busy preparing for the Artseen Frisco Artists Studio Tour!  I've been finishing new pieces, prepping older pieces, varnishing, wiring, and everything else that goes along with it.  If you are in the Metroplex area I would love to have you come by and see me on Saturday 10-5 or Sunday 1-5. There is a map available at the above link. I will have all of my work available for viewing and sale.  I will have snacks and of course some Lone Star beer on ice.  For those of you out of town, I will make sure and document the experience and post something next week about it.  Well, I got work to do.  See ya soon.

I've been working hard the last few days to get my office / studio in order.  It's quite a daunting task when you collect like me.  It was hard, but I hand selected the pieces I wanted to be surrounded by for inspiration.  I have about 15 boxes in the attic that didn't make the cut.  I finally feel like I can relax and get back to being creative. I still have a couple of bookcases that are works in progress but for the most part I'm done!  Take a look.

Prepping For Photography Show




Above are my entries for the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco Photography Show.  I've got the photo transfers framed with some old yard sticks.  I'm really liking how they look framed up with the rulers. This may be a new touch I stick with.  In other news, my studio is just about complete. I've only got a few more boxes to unpack and after that I should be ready to roll and create some new stuff.  I'll post pics when I get it ready!

Moving The Headquarters

I've taken a little break from the blog.....not because I wanted to, but because I had to.  We have been in the process of moving across town and I'm happy to say that we are all settled into our new home.  Above are a few pics from last week.  The first, is a photo of the Double T garage mural I did in my old house.  I hope to duplicate it in the new garage at some point.  My buddy Ryan and his wife Karin used my measurements earlier this year to put one in their garage too.  The second picture is of the new studio / office at our new house.  I have tons of boxes to go through and I'm going to be very selective as to what makes the final cut and gets displayed.  Luckily our new place has a humongous attic where I can store all of my trinkets.  I'm going to try and keep my new studio clean and crisp with an eclectic edge. We'll see.  I'll post pics as I move forward.

We are putting our house on the market in the upcoming weeks and I needed to straighten up......I mean "stage" my studio/office.  20 boxes later this is the result.  The quote of the weekend was when my wife called in both our young children in to look at the boxes full of magazines, programs, matchbooks, road maps, ticket stubs, bottle caps, pennants, newspapers, old books, buttons, etc. "Take a good look kids because when daddy dies you two are going to have to figure out what to do with all this stuff"  I think I'm kind of a borderline hoarder.  It was tough for me to box some of the stuff up.  I did trash a few things...not much.  If your are not an artist/collector.....you may not understand.  Don't worry the Junky Trinkets Headquarters will be back to old form as soon as we sell this place and find a new one.  I can't live without all my inspiration - "junk" nearby.

Inspirational Studio Spaces

After posting a studio shot last Saturday I got to thinking about some of the studios that inspire me.  Let's start with Dolan Geiman's space. Wow!  Now that is awesome!  There is also another blog that focuses on artist's work spaces.  They haven't updated their site in a while but there is plenty of old stuff to keep you occupied. It's called On My Desk.  I think after checking these sites out you will really get inspired!

Studio Saturday Revived

I haven't done a Studio Saturday post in well over a year.  Some of you probably have no idea what I'm talking about. So here's a brief rundown: when I started blogging I used to do a weekly post on Saturdays to keep everyone up to speed with what was going on the studio/collectibles room. Clutter is usually what is going on!  I know how much I love seeing other artist's workspaces on blogs and so forth...so I thought I'd post a current pic of the recently cleaned studio.  This is where it all goes down in the world of Junky Trinkets.  Older pics here.

Sunday afternoon I drove over to McKinney to check out the McKinney Artist Studio Tour. It was a tour of local artist's studios. The artists open their studios for two days and let you get a peek into their creative spaces. Here is a listing of some of the artists that participated. I started out at the Laura Moore Gallery in downtown McKinney. It is really a great little gallery with some outstanding shows that come through monthly. Above are some of my pictures from a few of the artist's studios that I visited.

So Long Cubbies


Well, baseball season if officially over for me. The Cubs didn't make the playoffs. Too many injuries at the wrong time during the season. Oh well, as any loyal Cub fan will tell ya, "Next year is the year." Above is one of my favorite signs in my studio. The Old Style sign...the official beer of the Chicago Cubs. So long Cubbies, I'll see ya in February! Thanks for the great 3 games in June!

New Shelf

Here is my new bookshelf with the LOUNGE sign giving off it's lounge vibe. The record player has a new home as well as the albums. Finally this room is straightened up. I'm starting a new painting tonight! I'm excited!

Studio Clean Up Day #2

Tomorrow's work...need any sports pages from any big Texas Tech victories? I got em.

Am I the only one that has 4 shoeboxes full of postcards, coasters, ticket stubs, decals, and other small paper items? I love these boxes.


The new bookshelf.....can't wait to fill it up....neatly of course.

Well I decided to go ahead a dig in a little today and see if I could make a little progress with cleaning up my studio/office. I tackled two more sections today. I was trying to organize some of my books. I have a lot of books that I keep around for future collages. I also have tons of art, sports, Texana, and history books that I enjoy having around for my personal use. Around lunch time today we went over to IKEA, which is about 5 minutes from the house. It's our annual trip to browse. I caved in a bought a new book shelf for my room to help "clear the clutter" if you will. I put it together in about 2o minutes and then I started going through my other bookshelves to divide up the books. Tomorrow I'm going to hit my newspaper, magazine, and program collection. I'm also looking for stuff to possibly sell on EBAY. Above are some pics of the new bookshelf and some of the paper stuff I'm going to sift through tomorrow.

Sunday Funday - Studio Peek - Lounge Vibe


What sits above my computer monitor on the wall of my studio? My sweet LOUNGE box lamp and my Texas Tech helmet plaque. These are two of my favorite things in my studio. Both are Ebay purchases from a few years ago. The LOUNGE sign is lit up as I write this. Nice touch.

Throwbacks - Old Kansas Sunflower Road Sign

In honor of the Texas Tech upset victory over the Kansas Jayhawks (defending National Champions) in basketball last night.....I thought I'd share a Kansas Sunflower highway sign that I have hanging in my studio/office. I bought this about 7 or 8 years ago at Canton First Monday Trade Days from a vendor that specialized in old signs. I think I paid $15 or so. What a deal for such a swell sign! This sign hangs above the window for now. Maybe one day it will be on display in the main part of our house for all to view. Pending wife approval of course.

New Painting - In the Studio



Well, I've got the initial drawing finished for my next painting. I got the idea from a Taco Bell commercial. In the background of the restaurant that the characters were in, sat a sign painting with the letters "El" on it. It looks like an old neon sign. So, I went out on my search for images that looked similar for my painting. I found tons of ideas. Above I have posted a few ideas and also the drawing I came up with. I'm thinking I'm gonna go with a bright red background with white letters and black trim. I've got a feeling that I may do an entire series on this image. I'm really excited about the possibilities. I first need to redraw the image on to a canvas. After that, I can start painting.
