Here are a few shots from our trip to Colorado last week. I shot two rolls of 120 BW film with the Holga....that leaves a little surprise in the upcoming weeks. I think I may have a few new paintings in the works from a couple of these. Colorado is a beautiful place! Good Times!

New Landscape Painting
As promised, I began a painting today. I had a little time because of the holiday....so I took advantage. Here is where I'm at with it. The painting is pretty much finished. There may be a few touch ups here and there, but for the most part its about complete. This painting is acrylic on 20"x 20" canvas. Above is a step by step look at it coming together.

New Landscape Painting Rough Draft
I had a little time today, so I drew out this small 9 x 9 sketch of a landscape that I intend to paint next week. I used a photograph from my Colorado trip last summer as a reference. I've got about seven 20 x 20 canvases sitting around the studio that are calling out to me. I am going to try and build up a bold sky with some nice cloud formations. I'm also thinking about a little red underpaint to create some interest. I'll post the progress next week. Stay tuned.

New Painting Possibilities???

I've now kind of gotten back into the swing of actually working again after that 3 month summer break. I'm getting the itch to start some new paintings and I'm thinking I might want to do another large scale landscape of some sort. I took tons of pictures while I was in Colorado that I thought would be good to go off of as references. Above are some of my favorite possibilities. Who knows, maybe one of these will be on a canvas soon.

Colorado Purchase - Elk Antlers
While we were in Castle Rock, Colorado we did a little shopping at The Barn.....you know looking for junky trinkets and such. My wife and I had been talking recently about finding some antlers to put up in our house.....to kind of give it that Georgia O'Keefe vibe. I wanted an old deer skull with antlers, but Carrie wanted just antlers. We found a good compromise in Castle Rock at The Barn. A huge rack of elk antlers mounted on the wall. They were a little bigger than we had originally planned on, but he price was right and I thought they looked cool. The picture above is the rack a few weeks ago when I bought them. I'm going to take all the fur off of the skull before we hang them inside. I'll post a pic of the antlers in their final indoor resting place once I get it finished.
7/8/09 - 26:27 - One full minute off of Monday's run. Don't think I can keep that going too long before it levels off somewhat.

Cave Hike - Little Squaw Resort

The cave, or as we found out...the overhang.
The view of the cabins from the cave rim.....yes, it was way up there!My cousin Andrew and I took on a challenge while we were in Colorado. There is a cave that is at the top of a very large mesa across from our cabins. It appears to be so close and easy to get to. Wrong! The climb was very steep and there was shale all the way up which made it very tricky for finding good footing. It was absolutely exhausting...and I'm in decent shape or so I thought. It took us about 40 minutes to reach the cave and about 15 minutes to get down, using the slide technique. Above are some pictures from our mini adventure. The view from the top was worth it though.

Moose near the cabin.Last week at this time we were enjoying some huge snow flakes along the Rio Grande in Colorado.....boy what a change in a week. We finally made it back to Dallas this afternoon. It must be like 100 degrees or something...ugh. We are now all unpacked and I'm about to pack again for my next adventure. I'm heading up to Chicago in the morning to take in 3 Cubs games at Wrigley with some friends of mine. Should be a great time! I'll share some stuff next week about the trips.

Truck Bed - Little Squaw Resort
Here is an image from our Colorado trip last June. We stay in some cabins along the Rio Grande about 30 miles from Creede. It is an old Ford truck bed that was transformed into a trailer. We started packing today for this year's trip. Next week at this time we will be there. There is no cell phone service or Internet, so junky trinkets will close up shop for a few days beginning this weekend. Getting away from technology for a while is actually pretty nice. We will have our XM radio there in case we need some tunes or if I need to check the Cubs scores.

Wednesday Wheels - 1979 Toyota FJ 40 - Dream Car
I'm a pretty simple guy. I don't really want much or need much. I drive a 1996 Light Blue Honda Accord. It has 160,000 miles on it. It starts up like a champ every day.....I'm knocking on wood at the moment. It's been stolen from my driveway before.....only to be recovered a week later minus a CD player. It won't go away. Hanging on to this car has now become a sign of my anti-consumerism beliefs. The more miles I rack up and the more years that pass by make me want to see just how long I can drive this thing. If and when it ever dies, I will probably get a used Toyota 4Runner for like $5,000 or something.....I hate car payments. I haven't made one in many years. Now, enough about my paid for hooptie. Lets just say I wanted to go out and splurge.......what would I like? Look above. I found this gem on EBAY, the auction still has a couple of days to go. It only has 4,700 original miles on it and it can be bought right now for $57,000. This is my dream car. The 1979 Toyota FJ 40 Landcruiser. This one is about as nice of one that I've ever seen. I picture myself driving this along the back roads of Colorado, fishing gear in the back with some Willie playing on the radio, just looking for the perfect spot catch a brown trout. This will probably will never happen in this vehicle.....I can dream can't I?

Creede, Colorado Mines
As I had mentioned in some earlier posts, my family has been going to the Rio Grande river near Creede, Colorado every summer since 1980. We stay for a week in a cabin alongside the Rio Grande. We basically just fish, hike, and relax. Just past the town of Creede are the old Creede mines. It is a really beautiful drive up through the mountains looking at all of the old mines or what's left of them. This is a picture I took about five years ago while we were up there. It is one of my favorite images of the Creede area. I'm counting down the months until our trip this summer.

Sunday Funday - Rio Grande Fishing
This is my favorite spot to fish in Colorado. This is the Rio Grande river about 20 miles from Creede, Colorado. My family has been going there since 1980. There are some big brown trout in these little pools. Here is one I caught in that spot last June.

Sunday Funday - Agave Wheat Beer Label
Beer is fun right? Here is the coolest, most artistic label of all the beers that I had in Colorado over the week. I like the print like quality and I'm always a sucker for skulls in sombreros. My brother-in-law had the mother load of Colorado brews stashed in the snow. The label was cool and so was the beer. It's made by Breckenridge Brewery in case you wondering.
