"St. Elmo Motel"

                                        St. Elmo Motel - 20" x 20" - Acrylic on canvas

I finished St. Elmo Motel today! It is 20" x 20" - acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas.  It has turned out to be one of my favorite signs that I've painted.  I think I like it because you can see the entire sign and there is still plenty of sky in the background.  It will be on display at the Frisco Discovery Center through February 27th.  If you are in town you should stop by and check it out!

St. Elmo Motel Sign Update

Lots of neon tubing!

Sorry I've been slow with the posts lately.  I've been pretty busy.  I was able to get some work done on my new painting today.  I'm almost there!  I need to get it finished for a local show that starts on Sunday.

Creating Your Own Framed Burlap Frisco Coffee Company Bag - Tutorial

Today I wanted to share a little craft that I did yesterday.  My wife really wanted to do something with a large frame she bought at McKinney Trade Days a few months ago.  She also wanted to incorporate burlap.  We brainstormed together and thought it might be cool if we created a piece that looked like a framed burlap coffee bag. We decided to make up a coffee brand named after our town.  The Frisco Coffee Company is what we chose.  It was a cheap way to create a large piece of crafty art. 24 x 36 frame $5, spray paint $4, burlap $3, stencils $3, Masonite board $4. Total for entire project = $19.
Here is the tutorial:

I took a piece of 24 x 36 Masonite board and stretched the burlap over it and then stapled it down.

I then measured and marked off the center of the burlap with masking tape.

I laid out my stencils and centered everything based off of the tape. Use whatever text you want.  We just made this up after researching different styles of coffee bags on Google images,

Then I taped around the stencils to assure that everything would be balanced.

I traced the stencils in sharpie and began to paint them in with acrylic paint.

I fit it in the frame to test for accuracy.

I spray painted the frame black separately, added a little color with the stars, and finally put it all together.

St. Elmo Hotel Sign Painting Update

I was up early Saturday morning......5:20 to be exact.  I was able to get in two solid hours of painting with no disruptions.  This is usually uncommon since I have two little ones keeping us busy.  Ryan Bingham radio on Pandora kept me company.  I was able to get some details put in on the top portion of the sign.  So far so good.

I finally screen printed something!

I bought a YUDU back in August and it's been sitting on the studio floor....untouched.  Last weekend I finally decided to give it a whirl.  I started simple with a text design that is inspired by my Thunderbird Motel shirt.  I printed it on one of my old undershirts so if I screwed up it would be on an old shirt. I really didn't believe that my first attempt would be this good.  I've ordered a few more supplies to take my screen printing to the next level....haha.  I plan to do more in the near future.  This is pretty fun!

 Hayes Carll show poster

Original photo- Available here

It's official.  My photo was selected and altered to create a Hayes Carll concert poster for a show at Lola's in February.  I think it turned out great.  Hayes Carll is one of my favorites, so it makes it pretty cool.  Thanks to Dusted Juke and Spune for putting this together.

Lone Star Beer Sign - Broken Spoke - Austin, Texas - Holga

National Beer Of Texas!

Fancy Etsy picture with a few of my Lone Star Beer collectibles

Here is another one of my favorite prints from the group I recently I developed.  It's an image of a Lone Star Beer sign that is on the side of an old tour bus parked in front of the Broken Spoke in Austin, Texas.  I shot it with my Holga.  I was super excited to see that it was almost perfectly centered!  This one of my favorite photos I've taken with the Holga.  I also found out that a local designer may be using one of my Holga shots for a Hayes Carll concert poster! Hayes Carll!!!  I'll let you know if it comes to be!  Prints of this Texas treasure are here.

New Artwork -"Blue Skull" - Mixed Media

Above is a new piece I finished a few weeks ago.  The title is Blue Skull. It was a Christmas present for my father-in-law. I drew his name this year in our family gift exchange. It is 12 x 12 on canvas with an antique yard stick frame.  I'm digging it!
